Good afternoon Jalops,
Today has been a great day for craigslist browsing. This 1992 Taurus SHO is for sale and looks mint; and what a steal at $1000
Does anyone have experience with these vehicles? It could be a great auto cross and family hauler.

I had a 93 Taurus Gl, I'm pretty sure they share the same four speed Auto with O/D...
That Auto holds this car back in a bad way, the 3.0 had the grunt, but the Auto didn't respond to it at all. Buy it do the Manual swap ;)

But I loved that car, It's roomy, and has tons of character.

I've owned 2 of these. Great fun, and the engine makes a wonderful noise once the secondaries open.
Rattles and clunks are usually subframe bushings, engine mounts, transmission mounts, or possibly control arm bushings.
1992 was the last year of manual-only SHOs. They are Mazda transmissions and have proven to be pretty durable as long as you don't do burnouts. Burnouts are a great way to get the diff pin to come loose and cut the transmission housing in half.
If it runs and drives and is registerable, $1000 seems like a fine price.
